SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN RESOURCE-INTENSIVE REGIONS
Dr. Ken King, Professor Jennelle Kyd, Professor John Rolfe, Professor Stephen Webb
Tuesday, 28 June, 2011 CQU Gladstone Campus
The resource sector is Australia’s largest single export sector comprising in excess of eight per cent of Australia’s GDP. It represents nearly one-quarter of private new capital expenditure and is expected to grow strongly over the next decade. With an expected $50 billion of expenditure expected in this timeframe for projects with a Gladstone focus the region is looking forward to a decade of unprecedented growth and economic development making it the growth centre of Australia’s Eastern seaboard.
Growth brings substantial benefits together with challenges to managing the provision of economic infrastructure including managing community impacts. Industry, government and the community have specific roles and responsibilities. The symposium will allow industry and community leaders to explore how best to use resource development as a pathway to create and strengthen economic development for the Gladstone region and more broadly for other resource-intensive regions in Australia
This Conference, part of our National Series, will provide an opportunity for industry leaders and academics to discuss the resource sector. It will provide in-depth critical analysis, debate and reflections on areas such as sustainable development, social impacts of mining and societal values, power and influence, and internal labour markets and job retention.
