Eidos Institute hosts two major national lunches per year. We remain committed to breathing new life into the public sphere, viewing public debate and transparency of public policy as the keys to healthy democracy. On April 14th 2010 the Eidos Institute Board will be hosting our first luncheon with the Shadow Treasurer, Honourable Joe Hockey MP. Minister Hockey's presentation, In Defence of Enterprise, will be a significant contribution to public policy in this election year. This is the third in a series of major speeches by the Hon. Joe Hockey MP, on some of the most important issues facing us today. Mr Hockey will outline why individual and free enterprise - economic, social and scientific - has been the foundation of modern western civilization. The nurturing and expansion of enterprise in its varied forms is essential to the future wealth and creativity of our nation and its people. He will argue that we must be wary of constraining enterprise through heavy handed and misplaced government intervention.

During the closing months of 2009, Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey embarked on a series of speeches which aimed to directly engage with the public on a personal level.

In November 2009 he addressed the Sydney Institute in a speech entitled "In Defence of God" eloquently addressing issues of faith and secularity with Australian society: "From my perspective a secular society respects all faiths and accepts that no religious organization should seek to impose its views on the functions of the government".

His 'In Defence of Liberty Speech' delivered to the Grattan Institute during March of this year saw Hockey speak of liberty and the price of freedom and democracy:"The way I see it, the choice is black and white. Freedom for each and every one of us. Or freedom for an elite few who want to tell the rest of us what to do".

His 'In Defence of .....' speaking tour has garnered significant attention from the media and is set to peak during the delivery of his third and final address 'In Defence of Enterprise' hosted by the Eidos Institute.

About Hon. Joe Hockey MP

Joe Hockey was elected to the Australian Parliament in 1996 and following his re-election in 1998, was made Minister for Financial Services and Regulation, one of the youngest ministers in the history of the Commonwealth. After the 2001 election, Joe was appointed Minister for Small Business and Tourism where he delivered the first Tourism White Paper to drive the future direction of Australia’s tourism industry. In October 2004, Joe was appointed the Minister for Human Services in the Fourth Howard Ministry and tasked with delivering a greater customer focus for the Australian Government’s major welfare and health services agencies.In January 2007, Joe was appointed Federal Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations and Minister Assisting the Prime Minister for the Public Service. Following the 2007 Federal Election Joe was appointed Shadow Minister for Health and Ageing and Manager of Opposition Business in the House of Representatives. In 2008 he was appointed Shadow Minister for Finance. In February, 2009 Joe was appointed by Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull as Shadow Treasurer.
