Eidos Institute Event Series Print E-mail

Eidos Institute is an unconditional supporter of ideas in the field of public policy.  We believe that public policy is best informed by high quality research.  We believe that the best democracy is an informed and included democracy.

After launching the Eidos Institute Event Series in October 2006, Eidos has quickly gained a reputation for running professional events, with quality speakers attracting attention from government, tertiary and corporate sectors.

As modern Western democracies continue to struggle to engage and include public opinion in a globalised world, the fight against civil disengagement and the growing gap in our knowledge community has the potential to alienate the most important spoke in the wheel of the ideal democracy – the public. As the complexity of our globalised world continues to increase in tandem with the scale and size of the bureaucracy needed to govern it, our key democratic principles must not fall by the wayside.

It is imperative that we avoid the temptation to fall back onto a particularly Australian view of politics and civil engagement, a mix of cynicism and derision that has in many ways lodged itself within our national psyche and continued to pervade a cycle of political apathy amongst successive generations.

It is for this reason that the Eidos Institute remains committed to breathing new life into the public sphere, viewing public debate and transparency of public policy as the keys to healthy democracy, and it is in accordance with this commitment that Eidos is working to reanimate and revitalise the public sphere on a number of levels, most notably through the staging of events aiming to facilitate and inform public discussion and debate.

Eidos Institute Lunch Series

Each year Eidos hosts two large-scale, national lunches which bring together the best minds to discuss social and economic trends and challenges. The series attracts leading national speakers with a focus on Australian national public policy. Our most recent event was a luncheon, attended by over 400 business leaders, academics and policy makers, with a keynote given by the Honourable Julia Gillard, Deputy Prime Minister, Australia. Our next luncheon will be on the 14th April with a keynote given by the Honourable Joe Hockey MP (more information).

Eidos Institute Breakfast Series

Each year Eidos hosts four state breakfasts. The series attracts leading state, national and international speakers with a focus on public policy. Our most recent event was a breakfast, attended by over 200 business leaders, academics and policy makers, with a keynote given by the Honourable Alan Milburn MP (UK).

Eidos International Innovation Series

The International Innovation Series attracts leading international speakers with a focus on innovation in public policy. Our most recent event was a breakfast, attended by over 150 business leaders, academics and policy makers, with a keynote given by leading thinker, Charles Leadbeater.

The Forums@Ann

New to our horizons and reflecting our commitment to ensuring that citizens remain engaged, informed and in the loop of public policy processes is our fledgling Forum@Ann series, aiming to bring together politicians, community leaders, political commentators & research experts to discuss current and topical issues of public interest.

The topic of discussion will be facilitated by a panel which will consist of experts from the fields of policy, politics and research, however it is our aim to frame the discussion and debate in such a way as to avoid a stagnant re-hash of old problems and stale solutions.  The lunchtime sessions will provide live music and the opportunity to network with some of the most innovative and creative minds in the area of public policy.

Eidos Professional Development Courses

Professional Development is recognised by Eidos as an integral function to expand Australia’s knowledge economy. We know we already have connections with great Australian minds and look to share this intelligence through workshops, courses and / or seminars.

In the near future we hope to offer our sponsors the opportunity to host professional development sessions relevant to their areas of interest and expertise. This will provide exposure to Australia’s professionals and allow you to be part of our intellectual expansion.
