Objective
The aim of this project is to evaluate a Disability Services Queensland (DSQ) initiative of the Intensive Behaviour Support Teams (IBST) in supporting individuals with a disability who exhibit challenging behaviours, their families and carers. The Intensive Behaviour Support Teams initiative (IBST) is a Queensland Government initiative from Disability Services Queensland to provide advice, assessment, and direct service response for people with a disability who present with very challenging behaviour, as well as support for family, carers and other service providers who support people with very challenging behaviours. The service is provided to people in their local community. The research will evaluate the service at two sites, Moreton and Ipswich, where IBS Teams are located. Additionally, an ARC Industry Linkage Grant application will be submitted in Round 1 2009 with DSQ as an industry partner.
Approach
Both qualitative and quantitative methodology will be used to evaluate the procedures and outcomes of the IBST services. Data will be collected from service users, their families and carers and IBST staff using focus groups, individual interviews, case notes and telephone interviews. Additionally, staff and service user surveys will be undertaken. Data from the qualitative data will be transcribed and analysed by NVivo. Survey data will be analysed using SPSS. A number of staged reports and presentations will report on the research in 2008.
Benefits
The findings of the project will be used to build sound, proactive policy which will improve the quality of life for people with a disability, minimise the challenging behaviours and promote resilience in their families, carers and service providers. The ARC Linkage Grant will investigate best practice in developing resilience and capacity through the delivery of early intervention, prevention and support services in individuals with a disability who exhibit challenging behaviour, their families and careers and DSQ staff.
