A National Conference for Emerging Researchers and Policy Makers in Human Capital
Background:
Graeme Hugo reminds us that one quarter of our research and policy workforce retires in the next seven years. He goes on to say there's a lost generation where their replacements should be... Who are our emerging research and policy leaders and what do they have to say? What evidence are they collecting and what will it mean for future policies to support valuing and investing in our people.
Over the past two years Eidos has developed a research and policy program in human capital. At Eidos we’re interested in how we as individuals and groups learn, how cities learn, how this makes a difference to the bonds we develop and the economy. We're also interested in the impact our lives have, the transitions we make and create between social spaces and institutions like families, school and work. We're interested in how we build capacity and well-being. Finally, we're interested in researching and developing policies for understanding and valuing people. For more information on past and current projects, or to become involved in our people projects being led by Eidos Chief Statistician Walter Robb email statistics@eidos.org.au and visit our fledgling website see: humancapitalgateway.org.
We thought it would be strategic for our network to start bringing together the best researchers and policy-makers interested in this program. So in 2007, Eidos Institute in association with James Cook University, Queensland University of Technology, Central Queensland University, University of Southern Queensland, Australian Catholic University, Griffith University, University of the Sunshine Coast and the Queensland Government organized a National Conference for Emerging Researchers and Policy Makers in Human Capital.
Aims of the conference:
EMERGE aims to showcase the human capital policy-related doctoral research and policy ideas from a range of disciplines and departments. EMERGE events are organised by Eidos Institute and chaired by Eidos Board Member, Jan Massey. This conference is part of the emerging researchers initiative of Eidos Institute and it’s members.
Eidos organises and facilitates EMERGE for graduate and early-career researchers and policy-makers; focusing on technical skills and processes for ongoing expansion in collaborative research capability. During the conference, Eidos provides an intensive, knowledge-rich environment for researchers and policy-makers to build invaluable skills and networks, offering multidisciplinary courses designed to focus on quantitative and qualitative methods for applied research-based policy making.
