Facilitating international collaboration on education and social research activities
Eidos sponsors a Fullbright Senior Scholar and International Fellow Program as well as an Eidos Exchanges and Visiting Fellows Program. These programs attract internationally-recognised educational scholars to Queensland to engage with researchers and policy makers about issues of major international importance. The scholars participate in a range of activities including mentoring early-career researchers, public debates and discussions, media presentations and other collaborative activities. These visits will result in the establishment of a major research project amongst Eidos partners with the ongoing mentorship of the visiting scholars.
Context
The increasingly global nature of knowledge, and its transmission, requires Eidos to develop and maintain relationships with international partners in the fields of education and social research. Supported by a consortium of Queensland universities, Eidos is in a unique position to draw on this capacity in order to sponsor internationally renowned visiting fellows, to participate in exchange programs, and to partake in collaborative research and publishing ventures.
International collaborative ventures provides Eidos, its partner institutions and networks, and the State Government of Queensland, with opportunities to access international expertise, to develop partnerships that will further the work of Eidos in coming years, and will develop the capacity of Eidos.
An international outlook provides Queensland with access to international expertise in a local context by means of public lectures, academic workshops, and seminars. The benefits of international collaboration extend not only to Eidos, but to partner institutions and the Queensland Government.
In 2005, Eidos and The Australian Consortium on Higher Education, Community Engagement and Social Responsibility (The Australian Consortium) was successful in a Fulbright Senior Scholar bid to bring Professor Ira Harkavy to Australia in August 2005. Professor Harkavy is the Associate Vice President and Founding Director of the Center for Community Partnerships at the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Harkavy has been actively involved in working to involve colleges and universities in democratic partnerships with local public schools and their communities. He also has a leading role in the International Consortium for Higher Education, Civic Responsibility, and Democracy which is situated at the University of Pennsylvania. The International Consortium is an international study of university’s civic responsibility.
Professor Harkavy has been involved with the Australian arm of this international collaboration, the Australian Consortium, since its inception in 2003. The Australian Consortium is a national network of scholars researching community engagement and higher education in Australia. The network is administered by Eidos.
